MAJOR new works based on intrigue, imagery and symbolism in Tudor England by Richmond-based artist Ed Kluz are on show at 'the gallery' in Ripon.
The solo exhibition by one of the most important of the younger generation of artists, takes as its inspiration the 118-year rule of the Tudor monarchy, when political revolution, religious reform and economic growth changed the social and cultural face of the nation – and especially its country houses – known as ‘prodigy houses’ – which changed from being defensive structures into expressions of individual wealth and intellectual sophistication.
Ed Kluz takes a number of these great houses – some, like Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire and Longleat in Wiltshire still standing, some, like Gorhambury in Hertfordshire, in ruins, and others, like Richmond Palace and Nonsuch Palace, long demolished.
Using both traditional painting techniques and collage, he creates images of the houses that are at once immediately attractive but also full of hidden wonders and delights.
For the first time Ed, who studied for a degree in Fine Art at Winchester School of Art, has also produced four original screen prints that are on sale at ‘the gallery’ in a strictly limited edition. He has also produced a screen-printed poster for the exhibition that features Tudor garden ornaments and is also available in a limited edition.
Daniel Hornsey of ‘the gallery’ said: “Ed Kluz has already established a high reputation as one of the best and most original artists around, and we are delighted to be able to host his first solo show here at ‘the gallery’.
“Several of his works were already sold before the exhibition officially opened, proving that there is great interest in his work. We look forward to a long association with this important artist.”
The exhibition runs to September 21.
