HAVING been in the news headlines for all the wrong reasons, Zimbabwe has suffered of late with fewer and fewer people visiting the country.
However one couple who have travelled there on numerous occasions have now teamed up with local tourist attraction, Newby Hall and Gardens, near Ripon, to bring a flavour of the country and its people to Yorkshire by means of a sculpture exhibition.
Tracey Stevens from husband and wife team, Matombo Ltd explained: “As with many people who visit Africa, we have a passion for Zimbabwe and their fabulously skilled sculptors.
“Having travelled around the country several years ago we began importing a small number of sculptures, mainly for friends and family who had seen our own collection at home.
“We established Matombo Ltd and buy sculpture directly from African artists dealing with the export, import and delivery process ourselves.”
Newby Hall is providing the perfect opportunity to showcase the work of numerous Zimbabwean sculptors.
This year visiting artists Dudzai Mushawepwere and Matthew Nakhawhale are demonstrating the art of Shona sculpture generating a better awareness of their skills and traditions passed down through the generations.
People of all ages are welcome to go and try their hand at sculpting under their careful guidance.
Unfortunately, due to the instability in Zimbabwe at present, sculptors are suffering like everyone else. Much of their business was dependent on trade and tourism.
“There is very little trade, virtually no tourism and the locals need food far more than sculpture right now,” added Tracey.
“This has had a devastating effect on the sculptors and their families.
“This third exhibition running until September at Newby Hall not only helps to promote Shona art, it helps these people and their families survive through the sales of their sculpture.
“We take pride in knowing that visitors to the exhibition can take away at least one positive side of the Zimbabwean situation in this fabulous work. “
The exhibition is open daily from 11am to 5pm. Normal admission to Newby Hall applies. For more information, you can visit the website at www.newbyhall.com or 0845 450 4068.
