PROMINENT local politician and farmer, Norman Nichol, who represented Kirkby Malzeard for more than 20 years as a councillor, has died.
Mr Nichol, who farmed at Sawley, was a former Mayor of Harrogate, holding the post from 1989 to 1990, and was later made an Honorary Alderman.

He was a member of Ripon and Pateley Bridge Rural District Council for three years from 1971 and served on Harrogate Borough Council as ward councillor for Kirkby Malzeard from 1973 to 1990 and from 1991 to 1995. He was also a county councillor from 1977 until 1996.

Mr Nichol was a life member of the National Farmers' Union and chairman of its Kirkby Malzeard branch from 1971 to 1973.

Paying tribute, Mayor of Harrogate, Coun John Fox, said: "Honorary Alderman Norman Nichol was one of the nicest politicians I have met. Norman was totally committed to the residents of his ward, and supportive of the Borough of Harrogate. He was a courteous and devoted family man."

His funeral will take place on Tuesday at 11am at St Michael and All Angels Church, Sawley.
