New record in annual sunflower contest

A NEW record for the tallest sunflower as been set in the annual competition among villagers at Marton-le-Moor.
At just short of 14ft, Ron Smith's monster bloom was a clear foot above his nearest rival when the results were announced at the village barbecue on Saturday. The winners were:

Men: 1 Ron Smith, 13ft 10.5ins; 2 Alan Watson, 12ft 9ins; 3 Gordon O'Brien, 11ft 9.5ins. Women: I Kath Maye, 12ft 4.5ins; 2 Mrs Wass, 12ft 2.5ins; 3 Mrs Burton, 11ft 6.5ins. Junior: 1 Oliver Maye, 12ft 4.5ins; 2 Lily Staniford, 11ft 9.5ins; 3 Charlie and Alfie Tennant, 9ft 11ins.
