No bonfire on Bonfire Night because of safety fears

THE annual firework display at Hell Wath will be without a bonfire this year after organisers said it has become too dangerous and too expensive.
Concerns were raised last year after strong winds blew hot embers around the site and stewards had to stop people getting too close to the fire as they attempted to keep warm.
Organisers of the charity event, The Ripon Gunpowder Plot, said this year's firework display will feature a contest of local talent instead of a bonfire.
'risks'
Gunpowder Plot chairman John Richmond said: "In our view last year was quite difficult to marshal and the risks we saw ourselves and the extraordinary insurance we have to pay made us want to try something different so we are going to have a concert of local talent.
"There will be local bands followed by a firework spectacular," he said. "The talent contest will have judges and we are now looking for bands and singers.
"Our first and foremost objective is to provide entertainment," added Mr Richmond.

Though the city has had a long history of celebrating November 5, the Ripon City Firework Display at Hell Wath has been the main display for the past six years, raising £30,000 for local charities during that time.
Mr Richmond said other changes this year include the introduction of a family ticket and an improved corporate area for event sponsors.
The 2008 Ripon City Firework Display will take place on Friday, November 7.
Bands, musicians and singers interested in entering the talent contest are asked to contact Stuart Martin on 01765 601218 or John Richmond on 01765 607364.
The Ripon Gunpowder Plot is also keen to hear from potential sponsors and anyone who can help on the night of the display.
